Open winner Stephane Matheu-Cambas defeated Benjamen Coates (6-3,6-4)
This was a classic battle, of which I have captured on Video. If you have cable or DSL you can view the video highlights by clicking here. Otherwise you may contact me to arrange for a download. This was a match of points won. With great volley's and incredible gets. At first it looked like Stephane was off, but after the first set he was very consistent in making great shots. This is the best open Finals I have seen yet at the nicest tennis facility I have seen in the Las Vegas Valley.

Player profile

Back for his second season with UNLV is assistant coach Stephane Matheu-Cambas, who works with Larry Easley and the men's squad.

Matheu-Cambas, 28, is a native of Paris, France, and entered the coaching profession after a successful pro tennis career.

Ranked No. 1 in his home country in the 16 & Under Division and then No. 2 in the 18 & Under category, he played on the ATP Tour from 1992-99 after earning a French Baccalaureate in Le Mans. He went on to reach a ranking as high as No. 26 in France and No. 286 in the world. In 1998, he earned a tennis teaching degree from the French Tennis Federation and spent the last summer as assistant manager of the French Players' Association.

"Stephane is as good an assistant coach that we've had in this program," Easley said. "It's nice to have a younger coach who is such a good player himself and, just as important, such a good person. He obviously earns respect from the current players because he was a successful professional in the sport he's teaching."

Matheu-Cambas is currently pursuing his bachelor's degree in business at UNLV. He married his wife, Kristelle, in 2000 and the couple has one daughter, Karra, born May 5, 2001.
