Parents, coaches,
players and all who are interested, I was unable to cover this Junior
Tournament and the last Lorenzi event as thoroughly as I have in the past
as I was covering and playing in the Adult Red Rock and Spanish Trail
tournaments. I did however go to Lorenzi on one of the nights and got some
video highlights, of which I put together a streaming video you can watch
by clicking here. For the Silver State
Junior Open I went Opening night and got some shots of the players and
Saturday morning I gave Rob Merriman a camera for the tournament award
photos. So for this review I am limited to the experiences I had opening
night, the draw and comments that were submitted to. If you have any match
summaries or tournament comments e-mail me by clicking
here, or e-mail VegasTenniscom@aol.com
or call me at 822-1081. Anyone can report their perspective! Opening
night the Nevada Tennis Association's Rob Merriman was on hand to set up
and run the preamble to the Pumpkin, The Silver State Junior Open. Also
going on this weekend in Tennis was an adult
tournament at Spanish Trail, along with Zonals for the high school
singles players. And I will not leave unmentioned the breaking news that
Sandy Foley of the Nevada Tennis Association has capped off three years of
work Wednesday when, in her presence, the City Council voted to approve
funding for Phaze one of the New tennis court Facility , which will
include the 10 lit soccer fields as well. This is a project that has had
it's up's and down's like a long 5 set match that took three years to pull
off. Now the money is approved for building on the park land at Buffalo
and Washington. Another NTA homerun is the new magazine that will be
published in coordination with the NTA. It will have pages of
National and local tennis news and information. This new magazine will not
only replace the Annual newsletter, but is slated to come out 4-6 times
per year. The Nevada Tennis Association is doing a number of things to
bring tennis to the forefront of the community. Their sponsorship of this
web site is one, the new tennis facility is another, their involvement in
getting the Desert Breeze tennis facility idea moving is another and
this new magazine another. Not to mention the variety of adult and junior
programs they are working on year after year. It should be known that the
NTA is a non-profit organization, and those who are looking to donate
funds or time may do so.
If donating money is not something you are led to do, but choose to
participate in other ways, this web site can inform you of what is going
on and how you can participate. Right now Las Vegas Tennis is thriving and
now the right hand can know what the left hand is doing... by coming here! This
tennis town is fragmented into camps, and now each camp has it's own
central retreat in VegasTennis.com to find out all the latest local
tennis news, event information, pictures, video and more. If you
have an idea foor this site, want to see something changed, improve or
want to contribute to this site by keeping me informed of your individual,
team or club tennis action, e-mail
me by clicking here, or e-mail
VegasTenniscom@aol.com or call
me at 822-1081. If you have an idea for the NTA e-mail Sandy Foley by
clicking here or call her at 792-8384. Your participation is everything! The
Silver State Junior Open began Thursday evening and I was able to meet
Kelly Thomas who's son, Alec Thomas, was playing Kristofer Yee.
Kristofer just recently won the Desert Palm tournament for the 10 and
under and has entered his first 12 and under event. I do not have the
results yet as the draw has not been posted. Alec
Thomas's mom Kelly also play's the game on the Las Vegas Country Club's
league team, and she outlined clearly how being aware of playing, although
simple, is very profound and something that stands true in all of life. If
you are doing the laundry, you do the laundry, if you are playing tennis ,
play tennis. It
makes no sense to being "Thinking" about Laundry while you are
playing tennis or "Thinking" of tennis while doing laundry. In
fact I would say that there is no value in "Thinking" about
anything, but choose instead to be aware of what you are doing now. Many
say "I can do more then one thing at a time." Yes, but can you
do just one? Well
I know I chose to do one thing at a time and do it well, and so I covered
Spanish Trails Tournament this weekend and missed all the junior tennis
action. But some parents and players have written in to keep me up to
speed. You too can write me and let me know what you saw to make this
review more complete. Below are snippettes of the comments and information
I have received. This site thrives on your participation! Reported

Reporter/Parent... Raul Martinez....
Ryan,
Just a quick comment in reference to the past NTA Silver State
Tournament. My daughter Amelia Martinez won the
Girls 10-under for her second straight tournament.
She also entered the Girls 12-under where she made it to the semis
before losing. Now she is looking forward to the Punkin G-U12. My son
Raul played U-12 but did not fared as well, but will also
play the Punkin. Again they've only been playing for
4 months. RE: Buy & Sell: I though you should
include a "buy, sell & trading" section in
your website for your members. For example, I am looking for a used Ball
Machine and perhaps there is a somebody who quit playing or
has no use for a machine anymore and would like to
sell it. This could be a valuable service for your
audience.
Regards,
Raul
VegasTennis.com Response.... Raul, There is a "Classified" ad
section to this site where people can list items they want to buy or
sell... and it is free!....Ryan

Comments = hey Ryan,
I did real well, and I feel good about the way I played
matches for silver state this weekend at unlv. My last match my opponent
and I even took a picture for you and rob Merriman. This is how it went.
Friday night my new coach, you know Dave Pate
took me after my warm-up to unlv. That was real cool of him to do that.
Fri- I played iesha James in my first round of the 14's div. Oh, I played
14's & 16's. And I’m only 13 but I’ll be 14 Nov. 7th. I'm the
youngest freshman I think at school which stinks. Anyway, I lost to iesha
James 1st rnd.
In the 14's lost 7-5/6-0. I was real nervous that Dave
Pate my new coach was watching me. Everyone comes up to him like he's a
big celebrity, he's not that way at all, that's cool! Sat at 9;00 I played
Alexis Garrett and won 6-3, 6-4. She's real
consistent and pretty good and she's young. Then after that 2 hours later
I played Alexia Chickarel (not sure of the spelling), in the 1st rounnd of
the 16's div. I won, 6-1, 6-1. She's good I went 3 sets just a couple of
months ago with her at lorenzi. Then, on to sun. Went and warm-up with
Dave pate to be at unlv at 9:00am. My mom took me and Dave’s son Dakota
who was also in the tournament. Then at 9am I played again in the 16's
against Sarah eckhardt, and won 6-1,6-0 which at that point I won for the
first time ever winning girls 16's champion. That was cool, and this time
Dave Pate was watching all my matches on sunday. And I was not nervous! I
got my trophy. On to final 14's consolation final against veronica kawka.
I played her just a few weeks ago at lorenzi and
lost badly 6-1, 6-1. But this time even though I lost to her I was happy
the way I played and kept my cool. We went 3 sets, oh my gosh long rally's
a lot of consistency and a ton of patience. We ended 6-2,4-6,4-6 great
match I gave it all. So I thought it was cool to be in the 2 divisions. I
came home with 2 trophies on Sunday girl’s 14's cons. Finalist... And
girls 16's champion. The trophy's are nice and a pretty blue shade, but it
was more great having my mom who comes to almost all of my matches for
support, She's my true pal, plus I had Dave pate and
his other son there, and then also Came my new
friend azziza. I just think she's awesome. The night before azziza
, Dave and me went to dinner and they pumped me up and then
azziza drove me home and listened to frank sinatra. How cool was that
listening to New York, New York. Ryan, it was a great and fun
weekend.
Next to me in my last match with veronika kawka, was
Jonathon Ribaste playing in the final for the 14's and won also. He's a
great guy. We went out to eat with my mom and his mom Friday night and
didn't get home till midnight.
See ya gabby"
