USPTA Professional 1

I am a proud member of the United States Professional Tennis Association—the world's oldest and largest association of tennis-teaching professionals. It was founded in 1927 and strives to raise the standards of the tennis-teaching profession through comprehensive certification exams and the education of only the most qualified tennis professionals.

Gordon is now the director of tennis and head professional for Summerlin Tennis in Las Vegas, where he teaches all levels of play and specializes in organizing group clinics for beginners and training high-level juniors. He has been involved in Summerlin Tennis since its inception. If you want to contact him you can call 233-5831 or e-mail him at Canuck10S@aol.com.

Also involved in high school tennis, Gordon coaches the Gorman High School girls tennis team, which has produced champions in 1998 and 1999. He is also serving his fourth year as the Nevada District president of the USPTA Intermountain Division, is on the board of directors for the Nevada Tennis Association and is an NTRP head district verifier.

Gordon has a bachelor’s degree in business management from Brigham Young University-Hawaii, where he was a ranked player on the university tennis team. After college, he went on to tour the professional ranks in satellite tournaments and challengers.

His future plans include obtaining USPTA Master Professional status, publishing a book or two and coaching a child to the top.

Outside of tennis, Gordon has lived and traveled all over the world. He was born in Vancouver, Canada, to a Scottish father and a Hungarian mother. His days off are spent playing in a roller hockey league.

A smoother serve
Think of a pendulum!

The key to a powerful serve is a smooth motion. A hitch in your swing impedes the progression of your arm and makes it more difficult to generate service power. To ensure a fluid motion, envision the pendulum on an antique clock. Notice how the pendulum swings effortlessly back and forth. Your racquet arm should swing down, around and then up to hit the ball with the same rhythmic motion. By maintaining flowing momentum on your serve, you will be able to maximize power. Incorporate the rhythm of a clock pendulum for a smooth service motion that is right on time.
