Anger and Tennis A few( of the players, just like a few of the adults and poor mannered "Pro's" on the tour, have not chosen to be in control of their game. For some reason they have believed the false notion that losing control by giving into the voice of frustration will help their game. If doing so helped a person's game or life for that matter, I might try it myself. But it does not. It only sucks dry a person's character while posing as fuel. But this fuel backfires. We see time and time again players who try rage as a tool, it tools them, by bringing them a difficult life or by taking down their focus in the match. This type of behavior is not only accepted by some fans and parents alike, but encouraged. This is weakness, and regardless how powerful the ground stroke, if a person is fooled into believing that which drains them is giving them energy, then they can be fooled into anything. For those who are playing against this kind of behavior you must use it to your advantage by not following suite.
Where does the frustration come from. Some say it is natural, some say it is genetic, some say it is good to "Vent it." Yet a few realize it has no benefit and they are looking to rid it from their repertoire. This article is for the latter. If frustration is something you choose to excuse in yourself, something you prefer to have this article is not for you. There is a very simple truth that strikes at the heart of this question. When you do what you know is right you feel right, and no amount of outside activity can take that contentment away. Whether it is in traffic, a tennis match or on the receiving end of another persons poor behavior, if you are content with yourself from doing what you know to be right, no one and nothing can take that away. However, if your sense of "Feeling right" is based on winning a game or the crowds approval then your disposition probably goes up and down often. Even those who do win the crowds approval and match after match can not feel right without adhering to their conscience on a daily basis. It is the law of nature. No matter what stunts you try one can not do things you know to be wrong and still feel right. Within each of us is a knowing of what is right and wrong for us to do in any given moment, and all one is required to do is to follow this knowing. Or you may listen to the various "Thoughts" in your head that "Doubt", "Worry" and "Second guess" this knowing. That is the choice. That is the game being played. Do what is right or Doubt what is right. Your call. Ryan VegasTennis.com Commentary |
