It was yet
another Junior event at Lorenzi who has made it a point this year to offer a
variety of ways junior can get together and play tennis, on
all levels. Their
LORENZI RACQUET CLUB SUMMER SMASH I coming up soon this
July 11 is for anyone to play, but allows the best players in the city to
compete. This is also true of their, Summer Smash II in August,
and the
LORENZI RACQUET CLUB 4 ACES JR. CLASSIC
in September,
where as this Junior Novice tournament along with the two other novice
tournaments they have, is for the junior player who does not win the more
advanced tournaments. If you have won or often place very high in the bigger
junior tournaments you are not eligible to play in the novice tournament, giving
those players who are developing their game a chance to do so without facing the
toughest competition in the city.
Lorenzi has
set up a junior program that accommodates the advanced players, as Craig Witcher
IS NOT SHY ON COACHING EXPERIENCED PLAYERS. He was the head coach for
UNLV's men's tennis
program for a number of years and played a number of years as a professional
tennis player himself. When not giving one on one lessons or clinics for Lorenzi
Racquet Club's League teams, he has formed beginner, intermediate and advanced
workshops for juniors and adults to play the game. He has even gone as far as
offered any new player a free session to try out their beginner, Intermediate or
advanced clinic. And if you choose to continue you can pay $8.00 per visit or
4#5.00 for six visits. I have pasted below their clinic schedule.

At this weekends
tournament the draw was strong among the Boy's and Girls' 10 and under. This
category is often left out of the other Junior tournaments which often begin
with a 12 and under division. But today it was 10 and under mania. Winning the
boy's 10 and under was Brandin
Kurtz, who's brother's also play at Lorenzi. His whole family was on hand to
watch him win all his matches to take home the trophy. Tyler Reese was also a
finalist in the boy's 10 and under taking second place.
There was also a
consolation round, ensuring each player got at least two matches, and in some
cases like the Round Robin for the boy's 12 and under each player was guaranteed
3 matches.
The winner of the Boy's
10 and under consolation Draw was Ishmael Gibson. Jalon Sisson came in second
for the consolation round.
For the Girl's 10 and
under it was Toby Miclat who made it to the finals getting second place and
Becky Clary who won the Draw taking first place. The consolation winner was
Jessica Hsu and Amelia Martinez was a finalist in the consolation draw.
For the Boys 12 and
under Draw, it was a very close Round Robin event with both Shawhan and Chesnoff
winning 4 matches, but Shawhan takes first place because when they played one
another Shawhan won. Chesnoff took second. Lockland took third and Mayfield took
fourth.
For the girls 14 and 16
and under the draw was combined for a Round Robin where Dangerfield was the
winner and Chicarett was the second place trophy winner.

I had a chance
to talk with George Davidson today who is partners with
Craig Witcher
at
Lorenzi Racquet Club, and he
explained to me in detail the various efforts in which Lorenzi has tried to
build a Country Club atmosphere "Without the monthly bill." He noted the water
service at each court, the players lounge with a high quality big screen TV, the
variety of clothing from K-Swiss, Fila, Wilson, and more. He said they have the
largest selection of equipment and apparel in Las Vegas, and from what I have
witnessed that is correct. I have yet to see the selection of tennis racquets
and clothing at any of the area clubs. He makes the point that Lorenzi is a one
stop shop for all a person's tennis needs, whether it be a new ball machine,
tennis lessons, Tennis lamps, bracelets and decorations, league play, novice,
junior, senior or adult tournaments, pick-up tennis mixers and the willingness
to delve into new and unchartered territory, like the
"Rock-N-Roll Tennis nights"
event, in order to offer players more options to play the
game.
