Larry Brown and Lynette Boggs McDonald teamed up together to bring Las Vegas a state of the art 23 court tennis facility, complete with 10 soccer fields and an outdoor theater.
The city council agreed to name the tennis facility the Amanda and Stacy Darling Memorial Tennis Center. The center court will be named in memory of the late Ronald Craig Darling. Larry Brown said “Fred Darling is truly an extraordinary Las Vegan. He has dedicated his life and given his heart to youth sports in the valley. The tennis facility is a deserving tribute to the entire Darling family.”

The Darling family has long been involved in sponsorship of youth activities and an annual memorial tennis tournament. Stacy Darling and her younger sister, Amanda, were killed in a tragic automobile accident in 1993. The family lost their son Ron in a motorcycle accident in 2001. All were avid tennis players and active with the Nevada Tennis Association. Through the foundation, Fred Darling, father of Ron, Amanda and Stacy, has annually raised thousands of dollars for local charities.

“There is a shortage of tennis courts in the valley, and this complex will not only be able to cater to individuals and teams, but will accommodate national tournaments and championships that will bring tourists and dollars into our community,” said Councilwoman Lynette Boggs McDonald, who worked with the Darling Foundation to negotiate and secure the grant. “This $1 million gift is the largest in the history of our city and will serve as a model for future recreational facilities and partnerships.”

Thanks to Lynette Boggs McDonald, Larry Brown and The Darling Family for this huge contribution to tennis. The tennis center is supposed to be ready by July 2005. Applications for a Coordinator and head pro will be taken by the city and a decision on who will run the facility will be made soon. Those interested in applying can e-mail me back for the contact information of the city office in charge of taking applications. The City Parks and Recreation will be in charge of deciding who will run the tennis facility. If you know of a qualified person let them know of this excellent opportunity.

UNLV PLAYER WINS FINALS OF COLLEGE  ITA Mountain Region
men's Championships.

Good Job Henner Nehles and coach Owen Hambrook. This is the first time this has happened in many years.

COME AND SUPPORT THE TEAM...
This weekend UNLV men's team has a competition

"This was a big day for UNLV tennis," UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook said. "Henner lived up to his billing with a very solid performance in the final. He'll now get a chance to show his talents at on the national stage." As a team, UNLV earned enough points from individual play to advance to a four-team playoff to be played in Boise, Idaho, in late January. The Rebels will join host BSU, New Mexico and Colorado in a one-day event that will determine which team from the Mountain Region earns a spot in the Indoor Team Championships.

GRAYDON OLIVER WINS DOUBLES TITLE
Some of you may recall Graydon Oliver from the Serena Williams benefit. I know that out of all the pros there that day it was Graydon that had impressed me the most. So much so that I wrote about it in my Serena article. It is not always the best person that becomes the best player. Some times angry mad men become contenders, just like anything in life. There are those that compose themselves with the right attitude and those that do not. Graydon Oliver is not only an excellent tennis player, just winning a major ATP tour doubles title against the #1 player in the world, but he is most importantly an excellent example of how to carry oneself as a person in life. When meeting Graydon it was obvious here was a kid that loved what he was doing, gave it 100% and had the best attitude. Just a simple example was the way he promoted his sponsors while playing at the Serena event. It showed an appreciation and awareness of the impact sponsors have and the two way responsibility that many players forget. And his intentions were genuine, you could tell. He wore his patches and explained them with heart. Heart is a good word for the player who went from college to "Just trying a couple pro events" to winning titles. In fact, in the three weeks Graydon has been inn Asia he has won two titles and one runner up. Now all he has to do is keep that focus.

Good job Oliver, and as I said in my e-mail back to him when he informed me of his win..."It is good to see someone with the right kind of attitude is winning."
