Sheryl Bon beats the number two seed in Pasadena California Rose Bowl.
Asia Muhammad , also in the semifinals, faces off against Sheryl to see who
will be in the final.
April 14, 2003 By Ryan
Wolfington Yahner
advances for Vegas
Maggie
Yahner won two rounds beating the number 17 seed from Illinois, Taylor
Marable, before barely losing to the number two seed Magdalena
Bresson, 6-4, 6-1. In
the first round she defeated 7-5, 6-0. In the
second round she beat Taylor
Marable 6-2, 6-4. Maggie advances farther then any other Las Vegas
player in singles. Then Maggie lost in the consolation draw against the 11 seed L.
Sveke. Last Super national it was Sabrina Capannolo who put Vegas
on the map winning the girl's 18 and under doubles. This achievement
so long belonging to the Nationally ranked Christian and Catrina
Thompson.
Sabrina is duplicating this performance in the girls 18 and under
doubles by reaching the semifinals. Maggie is slowly but surly inching her way up showing that she can
hang with the top seed player in the most competitive event of the
year. I recall meeting Maggie at Lorenzi Racquet club last
Summer, when she came to play in a district event. And during the
whole weekend she stayed and watched match after match with
interest. This type of innate interest is all that it takes for a
player to enjoy the game and ultimately one's life. In fact, Melissa
Gibson described how her daughter Gabrielle had initially struggled
with wanting to play the game at all. After years of not having the
success she wanted, she was down on playing. But when she would
watch Maggie play at Desert Palm with shear joy in doing so, it
inspired her to start really playing again.
Tennis is to be played because it
is right. When a player has a love of the game that is all they
need. This motivation is enough. Some people just like to compete.
They like to strive and do it right. That is the game. There is no
need to worry about where the game will take you, you just play now,
and give it your full attention, and let the cards fall where they
will. So many players lose this love of the game by getting caught
in the mental about rankings, and future plans. Just play, and in
all you do , do it right, then the rest will take it's course. Let
the other players be worried about all the mental stuff. Play this
point and address the next point when that time comes, and not a
moment before... These national
events, like the Easter bowl, give players that are the top of their local and sectional
field a chance to compete against players that will give them
competition. Last time Maggie played in a local event she went right
through the draw unchallenged. Most of the best players were not in
the draw. What happened in Las Vegas is the best players started
staying home one by one, until eventually few top players entered. Yet now with local events being promoted
by VegasTennis.com , I have been recruiting the best players to no longer sit at home but
to come together in these draws, then players like Maggie, and even
the Thompson girls, can get competition.
Next
Month, May 16 -18th I am putting on the VegasTennis.com
Junior Circuit
tournament at Bally's
Tennis Club,
and I have some of the best girls in town, including the Thompson
girls, playing. I have made a point to get the best
players in town and possibly some from out of town, to play. I
am making it as much like a professional event as possible,
with prizes going to the winners like sweat suits and
sneakers, along with having ball boys and ball girls in the
finals matches, with an umpire and score caller. There is a
open mixed doubles draw, doubles and singles. While it is
quicker and cheaper for a tournament director to have the
super tie break in lieu of a
third set, that is not reason enough to limit the match
experience for the player. Juniors pay to play and that is
what they will get in the VegasTennis.com Circuit. The VegasTennis.com
Junior Circuit matches will be 3 full sets. To
sign up online or to find out information on this event click

10th, 2003 Alexis Garrett won a Tier 2, girls 12 designated tournament in Southern California
this past weekend. The South Bay
tournament was a very large 128 round draw tournament. Along the way she upset 3 seeded
players. The tournament was a 2 weekend tournament. Alexys has been
showing her skill by not only winning local 12 and under events but
the 14 and under category as well. With
what I put together at Desert Palm, the Largest tournament that
never was, now everyone knows it is possible and this town can now
begin to have many high competition events with large draws like
that of Southern California. It is just a matter of doing the work.
Another solution is to have a double draw where the tournaments are
two weekends long back to back like the ones in California. The
first weekend singles and the second doubles, or you can run the
same draw twice. Why not have an event every weekend? week...Feb
20, 2003 Julia Baltas wins
