Men's 3.5 Doubles Flamingo Strikes again. Steve Henderson, the captain of the men's 3.5 District Championship team and his partner Mark Geness also on the flamingo team, made it to the finals and won 7-5, 6-0 against their opponents who also are both from the Flamingo Championship team, Charlie Russel and Joe Porava. The first set was some excellent play with incredible volley's on both sides, and in the last set Mark Geness went on fire hitting with reckless abandonment and placing. Over heads, forehands. Many of which were returned by their opponents only setting them up once again for the wrath of Geness. To reach the final Steve and Mark beat Jonathan Pruneda and Mathew Kubrick in a very good match 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. This was filled with excellent play as well. Jonathan and his partner Mathew reached the semifinals by beating Kevin Faber and Rick Hewitt in two sets 7-6 with the tie breaker going 7-4 and 6-3. Steve and Mark reached the semifinals by beating John Bielun and Robert Schiffman 6-3, 6-3.
On the other side of the draw was Joe Porava and Charlie Russell beating Stacy Darling finalists James Lash and Troy Wolf 6-3, 7-6, And Michael Holcomb and Herman Vernell in a very close match 7-6(7-4) 7-5. This could have been the closest match of this division. Michael and Herman recently were in the finals coming in second at the Lorenzi Championships. To reach the semifinal round Mike and Herman beat Randy Lunger and his partner Richard Newton. Men's 4.0 Doubles Isley and Van Diepen hustle it through..... match after match they went through their opponents beating Steven Jarzembowski and Tia Vongsamphanh in the first round 6-3, 6-3, James Eisenberg and Indio Durand in the second 7-5, 6-2. In the final it was Chris Penny and Steve Spelman that fell to their power and hustle 6-3, 6-2. Drew and James also played in the singles tournament. But this time James took home the Gold Cup.
Steve Spelman and Chris penny had to beat the hard hitting duo of Brian Lashley and Arthur Mayo, and in the first set it was a challenging match forced into a tie breaker. But in the end Steve and Chris won the breaker along with the next set 6-1. It seems Brian Lashley and Steve Spelman are paired to face off often, as Brian beat Steve then went on to win the Lorenzi Championships, then Steve beat Brian and went to win the following Desert Palm Summer Sizzle, and now tonight they faced off in the first round. Steve and Chris then won the second round against Holly Graves and George Powell 6-3, 6-2. Arthur Mayo, who played with Brian came to ClubSport a week later to watch Brian play with a cast on his hand having just finished surgery to fix his broken hand. He said when it heals he will resume his play on in the open division.
4.5 Men's Doubles..... was the winning pair of Omar Cabahug, who is listed on the ALIST for those who want to contact him to play, and his partner Charles Farber. Woman's Doubles 2.5..... In the woman's 2.5 Bernetta Stebrite won the doubles final last week with her partner Chris Mason. Chris was also in the finals at Stacy Darling and this doubles pair were in the finals of the Lorenzi Championships 3.0 division just weeks ago. They seem to have one of the best attitudes on the court, just focusing on playing without the mental weights some players choose to carry before, during and after the matches. And last week it paid off as they defeated the Stacy Darling champions Mila Ortiz and Richie Jenkins in two sets 6-3, 6-0. This after a very hard fought first round win against Julie Baron and Addie West that went three sets ending 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. Mila Ortiz and Richie Jenkins got to the finals by beating Kim Fetterly and Michelle Gushard 6-2, 6-4 Kim Fetterly would later take home a Silver Cup making it to the finals in the Ladies 2.5 singles and her doubles partner Michelle Gushard took home the Gold cup after winning the 2.5 singles as the pair played each other in the final .partner What a perfect ending. And they both put the time in staying involved in the whole event and it paid off for both.
Woman's 3.0 Spellman and Warner Defend Title...The Stacy Darling winners kept a grip on their ClubSport title as they beat Linda Hov and Helen Margulis in the first round 6-3, 6-1 then to get into the finals they played Carol Doria the Stacy Darling mixed doubles finalist and her partner Kari Cranford, both of which were volunteers at Stacy Darling. Carol's husband Dean Doria was there. He is an open player in the valley and Kari's son also plays in the open category, Blake Lamberth. But Janet Spelman and Shelleye Warner beat the pair 6-2, 6-1 then faced their toughest challenge in the finals against Alisha Walls and Krvsti Hartnev. The final score was 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. To reach the finals and ultimately the Silver Cup Alisha Walls and Krvsti Hartnev had to beat Jill Davis and Laurie Steed. This took then three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. Then they faced Carmon and Lynn Cimber defeating them 6-4, 6-2. Steve Spelman, Janet's husband also made it to the Doubles finals for the men's 4.0 but went home with a Silver trophy to her Gold.
Woman's 3.5 Doubles Jennifer Petrie and Carol Spelman take home the Gold cup in the ladies 3.5 doubles. They played Rubvlee Masters and Janet Wellman in the finals with a three set score 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 as this was an extremely close match. Jennifer Petrie would also later g on to win a Silver cup in the mixed doubles with her husband. To get there Jennifer Petrie and Carol Spelman had to beat Marv Burns and Ursula Kirschner, which they did 6-3, 6-4. But Ursula would later come back to win the mixed doubles 3.5 Gold Cup. In the meantime Jennifer and Carol would then beat the second seed Amy Audino and Susan Cane 6-0, 6-1 proving that seeds are just numbers. The Silver Cup winners, Rubvlee Masters and Janet Wellman, reached the finals by defeating Susan Hodges and Chrisie McGarvey 6-3, 6-4.
Woman's Open Doubles This was some great tennis. Watching the first match between Pamela Loyd and her partner Charmaine Dadian verses Susan Cowlen and Sandy Mecca. Both side had great volley's and the play was extremely steady. But in the end it was Pam and Charmaine who took it 6-2, 6-3. In the final they did the same as they met April Chavez and Stacy Darling mixed and singles champion Dawn Farber. They both play for the Flamingos 4.5 team which won Districts and is going to Sectionals. But that was not enough today to beat Pamela Loyd and her partner Charmaine Dadian. They won the final 6-3, 2-6, 6-0. To reach the finals April and Dawn had to beat Dina Basil who just recently finished playing on the ladies professional tour having at one point been in the top 500, and her partner Leslie Jacobs. April and Dawn won that match 6-4, 6-4. Talking to Pam afterwards she discussed an idea she had to try and gather together some sponsors so she could bring together more open players at a tournament by offering prize money. Many people have ideas and are led to do something about it and Pam is doing just that. Similarly on the men's side of things Tim Blenkiron has put together a group of open players that meet and play a first to eight games tournament, now with a 16 person draw, and maybe in the future a 32 player draw. They all put in $10.00 and the winner takes all. Click here to see the article and pictures of this event. Pam said she did not start playing until college and now she is one of the best woman players in the Valley. Her partner Charmaine said she played Junior tennis and was at one point highly ranked in the competitive junior tennis section of Southern California. Click here to see singles review
