By Ryan Wolfington 3-2003 Asher has just been voted to be the new chief umpire for Las Vegas and is now the President of the Nevada Umpires Association. Asher has a history of referring sports with experience in Softball and basketball. He began playing tennis in his 40's and when he saw a notice needing umpires for tennis he knew it was something he would be good at. He has worked with George Davidson for years, helping with the administration and accounting of providing local tournament directors and organizations with umpires for their events. Whether it is a UNLV college match or a local and sectional tournament, umpires are relied on to make line calls, settle disputes and rules of the game. Asher explained that King Pickford, Ron Heitman and Susan McFarlen all have more years of service but when it came down to who would take over for the now retiring George Davidson, they all decided that Asher was the man for the job. Even tempered and not intrusive, Asher offers tournament locations the stability and objectivity they prefer. Asher is dedicated to making the umpires association and the services it provides efficient and correct and has just let me know that anyone can come out and become a umpire by going to the two day seminar April 5th and 6th. Call 242-4364 to attend. Umpires do get paid, anywhere from $59.00 per college match or $12-14.00 per hour for local events. A big need Asher has is for umpires who can work during weekdays. Call 242-4364 if you can do it.
