VegasTennis.com MEET THE FROCKERS MATCH PLAY....

At first I was not going to have the Match play this holiday. I had many other things I could do. But I knew I was led to do it, and in life when you follow that knowing it always works out. Of course there are doubts, but the doubt is never true. This is a why I smiled the last night when we all went to Flaminio Malgutti's Cafe Capri on the Las Vegas strip. Little Ozzie Tavara, new comer Kaja Banas, Chris Painter and Trenton Alenik, Turnberry member David Harris, Josh Levinson, Skyler Levinson, Lauren Centrella all were up there singing with the Karaoke. It was amusing and they all had great voices. In the Match play Challenge awards ceremony Ozzie and Tiffany Taveras got "Most promising players" award. Note, my last years pick was Brianna Moyle and she ended up proving me right many time over. The key is the player loves to play and the parents and coach support it. Those are three pieces of the puzzle that make a big difference. The captains award went to Frideric Prandecki, who was an example to all the kids with his ability to pull the team together. Kaja Banas got VegasTennis.com's biggest award, the "HEART AWARD" for giving 100% all the time. She was a very big asset to the week of competition and always played with a lot of heart. That is what life is about... I really enjoyed 2004.

NATE SCHULMAN CUP

... Palm Springs

VegasTennis.com took numerous players down to the NATE SCHULMAN CUP in Palm Springs and many had trophy's to show for their valiant efforts. What amazed me was that the Vegas kids not only could handle California competition, but in many cases dominated. I always knew the notion that other states had more to offer was false. In reality, there is enough great talent in Las Vegas. It was just a matter of getting all those players together often to compete and challenge one another so all can continue to rise. That is now happening.

On the trip were Frideric Prandecki, who beat the number one seed in the 18's in an amazing 3 set semi final. He then went to take second place. Trenton Alenik won the back draw of the 18's. Julia Baltas played two divisions reaching the semi finals of the 18's and winning the 16's. Exchange student from Russia Anya Bukina reached the semi-finals in the girls 16's. Kimberly Yee played incredibly reaching the finals of the girls 12's, and Kimberly is only 8 years old. Tiffany Taveras played very well reaching the semifinals of the girls 12's. Anita Lee won the girls 14's consolation.

One of the better matches had to be Anya Bukina vs Kaja Banas in the girls 16's. Anya won in a very close battle. Also on the trip was Ozzie Taveras, German exchange student Emanuel Haug, new local players Kaja and Maia Banas and their mom. Zack Macareag , who reached the 16's consolation final and  Jesse Capps also came down, as did Chris Painter and his parents.

Palm Springs weather was incredible and the Rancho Las Palmas Country Club was one of the most beautiful tennis centers I have ever seen. I can understand why Bob Schulman's dad Nate loved Palm Springs so much. Every club is extravagant and tennis is every where. This tournament is a tribute to Nate Schulman's love of life, and nothing more expresses this passion then the picture of him hitting a back hand at 94 years old.

Harry Fritz, a long time friend of Marty Hennessy, ran the tournament and told me of  the stories of Hennessy and himself having fun over the last 30 years with tennis. Fritz, who was the #1 pro in Canada and a touring pro for a number of years said Hennessy was better then many of the touring pro's, but seemed to love teaching tennis and living in Las Vegas with his wife and kids instead of the life of the men's tour. They use to call him "The Iron man" for his unbridled work ethic and ability to teach lessons all day and then go and take sets off these touring pro's at tournaments.

The trip was a great success, with the kids performing well. Most of all, the kids got to know one another and in the end this will be the greatest benefit of all. Creating a tennis community in the real sense comes from trips like this. VegasTennis.com can continue to do it's part to bring tennis alive in the Valley one match at a time.

Thanks to VegasTenis.com's Marty Hennessy Jr Tennis Foundation and Bob and Winnie Schulman, who made it possible for this trip to happen. Without the financial help of many of you it would not be possible to offer the advanced kids these chances to compete. In the future, VegasTennis.com's Marty Hennessy jr. Tennis Foundation will be looking for a van or SUV to use in taking kids to these types of tournaments. If you have the ability to donate such a van it would make a huge difference.

Junior tennis has come a long way since 3 years ago when each club and even players were segregated from one another. Now, in the spirit of cooperation, all organizations and clubs are working together, and in the end that means better and more advanced tennis for everyone. Because in fact, if all of us just do our part the end result is a VegasTennis that is on fire. Look at the evidence with Tim Blenkiron's students Cristala Andrews reaching the quarters of the Orange Bowl in Florida. Asia Muhammad beat the #1 girl in France to reach the quarters in the Orange Bowl. Then Simone Kalhorn, who is coached by David Pate at BALLY'S , reached the finals and took second in the California Bowl. Just weeks ago in an open national, three of the 4 semifinalists were Vegas girls. In this past sectional a Vegas girl was in every final, and Tim Blenkiron's Vegas girls won the 14's, 16's, and 18's. His two boys Kamran Linden won the boy's 12's, as I predicted, and Rishi Daulat took 2nd in the 16's. Tim Blenkiron students had a big year.

Thanks to the Nevada Tennis Association, devoted coaches and clubs like David Pate, Tim Blenkiron, Saad Ashraaf, Ben Coates, Zdenek Cernoch, Marty Hennessy, Kevin Bradley, Jeff Foley, Ken Shioi, Adolph Huddleston, Rob Merriman, Michael James, Owen Hambrook and many others, Las Vegas juniors are thriving. This could not be possible without the feeder programs that exist all over town, and most notably George McCall's Foundation which has been developing Champions for years. Leon Vernon's tennis program has helped introduce the Mc'Call kids into tournament tennis and ultimately into a better life, with scholarships and a sense of self worth. With something positive to do, kids no longer need to fill the boredom with meaningless activities. Instead of smoking cigarettes at the mall, chasing trouble, many kids now play tennis on the weekends chasing glory; And this makes a huge difference. Kids need something to do, and with a productive activity available to them they can keep occupied while developing characteristics that will carry them through all of life's challenges. "NO QUIT," hustle, focus, honesty, patience, respect... these are just a few.

Thanks to everyone involved, 2004 was a very successful year. The tournaments were once again larger then they have ever been and the good will and enthusiasm as good as I have ever seen it. Now we move forward into 2005 forgetting yesterday to make an even better tomorrow. Thank you for your participation and love of life.

BARRY LEVINSON LAW CLASSIC

This was the smoothest tournament I have ever run. Many of you have asked me to stop allowing time changes and by doing so the event went very smooth. The Barry Levinson Law Classic is part of the NATE SCHULMAN MASTERS SERIES. The story of Barry Levinson is an amazing one. Barry, who set off on his own at the early age of 16 personifies the American dream of persistence, indipendance and self sufficiency. As early as he can recall he had a job doing one thing or another. At the age of 16 he was already paying his own rent, bills and making ends meet. For years he did concert promotion and when he met his girlfriend, who now is his wife, he decided he would go back to school and become a lawyer. At this point it meant working two jobs and after a year or more of marriage Barry and his wife had 4 kids. So now it meant going to school, and paying the bills to feed 4 babies. Barry's wife said what they experienced was "Beyond poor." With absolutely nothing he carved out a life with his own determination. No help, no old boy network to help Barry. Even after he got his law degree no one would hire him. Then he moved back to Vegas and opened his own practise...The rest is history. Years later his wife turns on CNN and sees her husband. She still remembers the first paycheck he brought home, within seconds they went from poor to comfortable. Now Barry takes that "NO QUIT" drive and uses it to defend and litigate on behalf of clients every day. Maybe you will see him on CNN and you can say "I played that guys tournament." Thanks to Barry Levinsonn for being an example of the "NO QUIT" spirit. Congratulations to his son Josh Levinson for taking 2nd in his dads tournament in the boys 14 doubles.

TONY BENNETT AND MARTY HENNESSY

For years Toy has been coming into Las Vegas and each time he makes his daily stop to see Hennessy, his "Coach." In fact, Tony said of Hennessy, "He is one of my only true friends in Las Vegas." Tony has always loved tennis and in the past he has worked with Hennessy one o one, but is best with the members playing doubles and most of all with the kids at Henessy's summer camp. In the summers Tony use to come out and help Hennessy with his kids camp. "He loved it and we even took a picture of Tony and the kids and put it on a T-Shirt."

I think what has endeared Henessy to so many in town is his willingness to treat everyone with Patience, honesty and Respect. Over the years Hennessy has given many lessons and become friends with many celebrity's, however the relationship he has with Tony Bennett is the most special. So much so that Tony took a photo of Hennessy just weeks ago because he wanted to paint him. Bennett is a accomplished painter as well as entertainer. He loves art and that is why his foundation supports performing arts schools. In between sets at Turnberry Tony talked art with Ed at Turnberry about painting and their mutual interest in art. The principle is, no matter what you are led to do, whether it is sing and paint like Tony Bennett or play and teach tennis like Marty Hennessy, do it with everythig you have and in the end you'll have no regrets.

DAVID PATE CHARITY TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Once again Friendly Ford, Ticor Title, Bonanza beverage and numerous other sponsors showed up to support David Pate's charity tennis tournament. Each year Pate has raised money for the Sunrise Children's Foundation. This year he also raised money for the David Pate Tenis Fund which offers free tournamets and match play for kids, along with tennis scholarships to those who need it. The tournament was a great success with great weather and once again WILD OATS FOOD MARKET came through offering food for players and fans and SBARROS PIZZA had pizza each night for everyone.

In the ladies open finals Simone Kalhorn defeat Anya Bukina from Russian. In the men's open singles Kobi Ziv defended his title winning his second BALLY'S Open tournament, beating Lew Deleon in two sets.  Lew is now playing tennis for UNLV, and Kobi Ziv was once a top ranked junior 9th in the world.

In the men's 3.0 Frederick Irwin defeat Kirk Moll 6-4,1-6,10-7. This was a very good tournament for Frederic Irwin. He beat David Harris in the semi finals and one of the best 3.0's in town in Kirk Moll. In the Men's 3.0 Doubles Malinowski/Schick d. Krasky/Kreisberger 6-3,6-2.

Men's 3.5 Singles winner was the unstoppable Kevin O'Hara. Takig second place was BALLY'S 4.0 men's team captain Bruce Merrin. The Men's 3.5 Doubles winner was Don Curnutt and Ken Lee.

Men's 4.0 singles champion was newcomer Spencer Smith who defeated Frank Sidoris 6-4,6-1. Spencer just moved from Salt Lake City months ago to Las Vegas. Now he plays for Bruce Merrins 4.0 men's team. In the men's Men's 4.0 Doubles  Miller and Zimmer defeat Ellis and Wolf 4-6,6-4,10-7.  In the men's 4.5 Singles Lance Watson defeat Canadian. Joe Forrayi 6-4,6-3. Lance is a doctor that recently moved to town. He plays for Rob Kinas's 4.5 men's team.

4.5 Men's Doubles winners Reynaldo/Tokay defeat Jacob Cruze and Joe Forrayi.

Women's 2.5 Singles winner was Debbie Burgos and takig second was Brittany Adcox 6-4,5-7,10-6. I remember when Debbie was justt a beginner and she always played tournaments with the best attitude, even though she lost often. Well now she is wining tournaments and moving up in rating. Great job Debbie. Taking second is newcomer Brittany Adcox. Brittany has a cleaning business called BRITTANY Inc. Brittay also won the 6.0 mixed doubles with Flaminio Malagutti, who injured his leg at this tournament last year. This was the second tournamet back since his ijury. The two beat Marc Kreisberger and Laurie Steed, who took 2nd.

Women's 3.0 Singles winner was Laurie Steed. Laurie's bakery, Granello bakery, makes all the baked goods you buy at STARBUCKS. She won the ladies 3.0 division and June Deid took second place. Women's 3.0 Doubles Annetand DeGoes won with. Spanish Trails Graham and Menogh taking second. In women's 3.5 Doubles Kramer and Nedra Paschal, who works and plays at BALLY'S, won 1st place. Taking 2nd was Everson and Pizzo in a very close 7-5,7-6(5) match.

In Women's 3.5/4.0 Singles the young Dana Cortez won with Kristin Kellam taking 2nd. In Women 4.0 Doubles Hallberg and Petrie won again. This team is a very strong doubles pair.

In the Mixed 7.0 Doubles it was  Breytenbach and O'Hara who continued their winning straek to beat Estalita Paulin and Spencer Smith 6-1,7-6(3) in the final. Mixed Comb 8.0 Doubles Sara Hallberg and JasonZimmer won in two sets against Donny Bishop and Jennifer Petrie 6-4,6-2.

Mixed Comb 9.0 Alex Bose and Russia's Anya Bukina took first with Steven Lambert and Stoyanka Pantic taking second.

This years BALLY'S tounamet set another record for the size of it's draws. A good amount of money was raised for the Sunrise Children's Foundation and David Pate has put on numerous free tournaments for kids as a result. Thank you for your participation. VegasTennis.com was happy to administer and promote the event once again. See you next year.

RISHI DAULAT WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Here is a kid that had an amzing year. After coming back from an ilness that put him off the court for 6 months and an operation, Daulat came back and won the Easter Circuit. Then , as fall approached he took it to the next level and won the High School state shampionships. "It could not happen to a nicer kid", said Daulat's coach Kathy Pederson. "Rishi just so happens to be a very good kid and a very good tennis player, it was an honor to work with him."

Coach Pederson should get an award as well for all the work she has put into her boys and girls team this year.  She has really brought life to that program over the last couple of years. Dedication like hers is rare in high school tennis and coaches like her should be commended.

Jaldeep Daulat, Rishi's dad was quite a tennis player himself before his knee went out. He has always bee a strong supporter of junior tennis and each year he holds a junior tennis tournament, "THE INDIAN OPEN" which raises money for VegasTenis.com's Marty Henessy jr. Tennis Foundation. Rishi Daulat plays tennis year round and is one of the top kids in the nation. His coach is Tim Blenkiron and the two of them have a very strong relationship. In tennis, a lot has to do with your mental stability on the court and Rishi has been able to begin to master dealing with on court pressure. Winning the State Title is a perfect example of his ability to let nothing get in his way. Congratulations Rishi.

Dana Goyak's tennis birthday party

Peggy Donohue put together a fun tennis birthday party at Turnberry Place for her friend Dana Goyak. There to celebrate Dana's birthday were John Goyak Dana's husband,  Marty Henessy, Joy Bell, Winnie and Bob Schulman, Joey Cussamano, Neil Carmena, Anne Kellogg, Dora To, Scott Karosa, and many others. Unique and fun tennis games were played and Peggy had all the guests to her high rise home at Turnberry for dinner, catered by the Stirling Club. The food was incredible and the amusing tennis games were a lot of fun.
